Process Maturity Model

Objective - To provide the reader with a basic Process Maturity model that can be used to assess your business and have a defined path for further improvement.

Why assess a process for maturity?
It's important to understand the maturity of a process so that appropriate actions can be taken to further improve it and also because the success of many business initiatives depends on it. For e.g., we constantly see organizations or parts of it failing to effectively drive process improvement programs like Lean, Six Sigma, Robotic process automation, etc. That's partly because the processes are not mature enough for these programs to succeed.

Process Maturity Model
Maturity of a process evolves over various phases which have been listed below -

Level 1 - Defined and Repeatable
At level 1, the processes are defined and well documented. Along with processing guidelines documentation also include SIPOC, Process Maps, failure points and business objective of the process. The process should also show continuous adherence to the defined procedure which can be verified through SOP audits.

Level 2 - Measured
At level 2, all process metrics have been identified and defined as per CTQ, VOC and compliance requirements. Also, there are robust mechanisms for data capture, recording, storing and reporting in place. Data should be verifiable using the CUIKA method.

Level 3 - Controlled
At level 3, there is adequate governance and control mechanisms for performance metrics in place along with basic analytics on data. Non-compliance to customer or process requirement is thoroughly analyzed for its root cause and resolved using PDCA cycle.

Level 4 - Optimized
At level 4, operations focus on continuous improvement and process excellence via various methodologies and capabilities like Six Sigma (DMAIC approach), Lean Management, PDCA, Robotic Process Automation, end to end technology transformation, predictive and prescriptive analytics with the objective of improving productivity, customer experience, reducing lead time, defect and cost.
